What are the benefits of maintaining healthy trees?

Maintaining healthy trees is vital for various reasons that impact the environment, economy, and our overall well-being. Trees provide benefits like improving air quality, offering wildlife habitats, and supporting sustainable living and community health. They absorb pollutants, release oxygen, and help reduce carbon dioxide levels to mitigate climate change. Here are a few key reasons why ensuring the vitality of trees is important:

  • Erosion Control: Trees help prevent soil erosion by stabilizing the soil with their roots, reducing the risk of landslides and maintaining the integrity of the landscape.

  • Water Management: Trees play a crucial role in the water cycle. They absorb and store rainwater, reduce runoff, and help replenish groundwater supplies.

  • Wildlife Habitat: Healthy trees provide habitat and food for a variety of wildlife, supporting biodiversity and ecosystem balance.

  • Energy Savings: Trees provide shade, reducing the need for air conditioning in the summer, and act as windbreaks, lowering heating costs in the winter.

Some of the risks of having unhealthy trees

Unhealthy trees pose several risks that can have significant consequences for both the environment and human safety. Some of the risks include:

  • Safety Hazards: More prone to falling branches or toppling over.

  • Spread of Disease: Can infect other nearby trees.

  • Pest Infestations: Vulnerable to pests, which can harm other plants.

  • Reduced Property Value: Detract from property appearance and value.

  • Environmental Impact: Less effective at providing environmental benefits.

  • Increased Maintenance Costs: Costly to manage and remove.

  • Loss of Wildlife Habitat: Displace or harm animals and birds.

  • Fire Risk: More flammable, increasing wildfire risk.

Maintaining tree health is essential to mitigate these risks and ensure the safety and well-being of the environment and the community.

Thinking of just leaving the stump?

Consider this. Decomposing and decaying stumps attract a variety of unfriendly visitors such as mice, beetles, termites, carpenter ants, organisms, fungi and diseases. These destructive pests can become a health concern to nearby healthy trees, shrubs and plants. They can also pose a safety hazard, particularly when there is ground coverage from leaves or grass, creating a potentially dangerous trip hazard or lawn mower destroyer.

Can stumps grow back?

In some cases, yes, stumps can grow back into full-grown trees. Depending on how healthy the roots are, when some species of trees are cut down they can regenerate new sprouts (or suckers). Eventually, these shoots grow back assuming a dominant trunk(s) and become a tree again. Grinding, removal and chemical control are the most effective methods for preventing regrowth.

Conversely, some stumps and their roots can take decades to decompose, particularly if the tree and roots were previously in good health and a lack of organisms are present to aid in accelerating decomposition.

Is it better to grind or remove a stump?

Stump removal is challenging and could be very labor intensive. It requires heavy machinery, and sometimes a crane, to dig or pull out the stump and tree roots. Some roots can extend well past the drip line, and over 100 feet beyond the stump, potentially destroying a lawn along with underground pipes and wiring.

Stump grinding, however, is quicker, safer and more economical. It leaves minimal lawn damage, if any, and the decomposing chips left behind make a good organic amendment to the soil. In most cases, the location becomes ideal for replanting grass or various types of shrubs and plants.
