Frequently asked questions
Is the cheapest always the best?
A: When you compare quotes or estimates, consider a few of the following:
How deep will the stump be ground and what is normal?
Will any visible roots above the surface be ground?
What happens with the underground roots?
How long will this take?
Will the visible roots be ground or removed?
A: A thorough job takes longer and may cost a little more. When stumps have been superficially ground, and landscaping work is later done, underlying problems can emerge. It isn’t always necessary to remove buried roots but any work to be done should be clearly communicated so that the end result meets your needs.
Can I replant in the same area?
A: Yes. What you can replant depends on how deep we can grind the stump. We can advise you best after having seen the job.
Can I rent a machine and do it myself?
A: On small jobs you might actually save a few dollars doing it yourself. But typically the cost of rentals is more than hiring a service that specializes in stump grinding and stump removal.
What happens if there are underground wires or pipes?
A: Flags or paint marks will typically demark any areas around the stumps in a front yard before any job starts.
What happens with the wood chips?
A: When stumps are removed, they are ground into a mulch. How much mulch is produced depends on the size of the stump. It can range from some backfill to a significant amount of debris. It can be used wherever you need mulch. For an additional fee, we can move it to another area of your property. We can also include a disposal cost in your quote.
How far below the surface will the stump be ground?
A: A job done in haste may take less time, and cost less, but the depth of a grounded stump that is less than 8” deep will be a challenge when you try to plant or otherwise re-landscape the area. Stumps need to be adequately removed to allow planting, paving or other landscape installations. Make sure your contractor understands exactly what YOU need.
What is the guarantee?
A: If the terms of our agreement haven’t been met, we’ll come back and make it right, no questions asked.
Can a stump grow back?
A: Some types of trees will continue to grow after they’ve been cut down. Most trees will stop growing once the stump has been ground below the surface. In some cases, grinding surface roots will eliminate regrowth. However, there are certain species that may require the application of round up or other herbicide.
